About Our Meetings

Nordland Garden Club meetings are the 2nd Wednesday of the month from September to June.

The meeting starts at 10:00 to catch up on local Garden Club news, activities, gardening tips, flower design, etc., followed by lunch and then a Program Presentation from experts on various horticultural topics. We do several field trips a year to learn more about all things botanical.

A Brief History of the Nordland Garden Club

On September 8, 1937, a group of 10 Marrowstone Island women gathered at the home of Ruth Johnson and formed the Nordland Garden Club.  At that time, Marrowstone Island could only be accessed by a ferry or private boat.  With a population of about 150, the club provided an important way to share gardening knowledge, contribute to island beautification, and create lasting friendships and mutual support.

By 1939, the Nordland Activity Club was formed, and the clubhouse was built by volunteer labor and materials on land donated by A. M. Holdale.  When the bridge linking Indian Island and Marrowstone Island to the mainland was erected in 1952, residents could find entertainment off the island and the Nordland Activity Club ceased to exist.  The Nordland Garden Club inquired of the Holdales if that land and building could be transferred to the garden club.  It was agreed upon by the family and in 1953 the Nordland Garden Club purchased the land and building for $1.00.  Founding members Clara Lybeck and Ruth Johnson split the cost.

Upon acquiring the property from the Hoidales, the Nordland Garden Club filed incorporation documents with the State of Washington.  In 1963, the Nordland Garden Club was issued federal 501(c)(5) status and in 1973 a Water Rights claim was filed.

In 2009, funding was received as a gift from Joe Kurtzo, a long-time island resident, to provide a community space for all Marrowstone Island residents to enjoy.  The Kurtzo Pavilion and Native Plant Garden was planned, built, and is maintained by the Nordland Garden Club.

The original clubhouse building was a shell of bare walls, with a few odd windows, an outhouse, and minimal electricity.  Through fundraising and much hard work by volunteers, the building has been improved over the years to its current condition.  It serves as a gathering place for other island groups and private events, and continues to be the home of the Nordland Garden Club as we carry on our original purpose of garden education, community service, and social connections.
